Gavin King is based in Cairns, in the beautiful Tropical North Queensland region.
He is the co-founder of TropicGroup, an innovative media and lifestyle startup.
Gavin’s also a published author and a former Member of Parliament and Assistant Minister in the Queensland Legislative Assembly.
Gavin was so determined to be a journalist he started his first business – a music magazine – at the age of 15. By the age of 21, he had worked his way up to become the editor of weekly magazine Revolver, one of the largest weekly publications in Sydney.
In 2000, he took a job with aid agency World Vision in the community of Papunya, west of Alice Springs, to work with Aboriginal people addicted to petrol sniffing. He spent two years at the community, project managing the building of a recording studio that is still successfully operating to help people recover from the scourge of addiction.
Gavin returned to journalism in 2003, and went on to work for News Corp for 9 years in senior positions for The Centralian Advocate, The Cairns Post and The Sunday Mail. His various roles have included political reporter, business editor, North Queensland correspondent, chief of staff and finally editor-at-large at The Cairns Post, where he became the face of the newspaper with regular appearances on TV and radio segments, and a large online presence.
In 2011, he resigned from The Cairns Post in a somewhat crazy-brave bid to win the seat of Cairns at the 2012 state election.
Luckily he won the seat, because there was no plan B.
Shortly after being sworn in as the Member for Cairns, Gavin was appointed Assistant Minister for Tourism. From 2012 to 2015, his focus was getting the tropical city back on track after years of tough economic times, high crime rates and substandard health and hospital services.
After losing the seat in 2015, he wrote “Can Do”, the authorised biography of former Queensland Premier Campbell Newman published by Connor Court Publishing later that year.
In early 2016, he joined forces with a group of local businesses in Cairns to launch Tropic Group, a multi-platform, integrated media and lifestyle company servicing tropical north Queensland and the inbound tourism market. The company’s business arms include online news site Tropic Now, deluxe print magazine Tropic, a range of events, a creative studio servicing marketing and design clients plus some other cool projects in development.

Gavin met and married his wife Leah in Cairns, and their first child Saskia was born at Cairns Base Hospital in 2010. Their second child, Percy was also born in Cairns in 2012.
